Cardiac Rehabilitation
Experiencing a cardiac event, or receiving a new diagnosis of cardiac disease or disorder, can be overwhelming for both the patient and their caregivers. Cardiac rehabilitation, or cardiac rehab, offers an all-encompassing program for patients to learn about their cardiovascular health, factors that influence cardiac health, as well as a safe space to exercise in order to regain their quality of life. Engaging in cardiac rehabilitation programs has been shown to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality for patients following a cardiac event as long as 14-years following completion of the program. One of the key considerations to patients engaging in a cardiac rehab is rapid access following a cardiac event. Unfortunately, there is currently only one cardiac rehab program in Salmon Arm which has a lengthy waitlist. Evidently, there is an urgent need to increase access to cardiac rehab programs in the Shuswap community.
Rapid Access Cardiac Rehab
The Shuswap Cardiac Society aims to provide the community with rapid access to a comprehensive, evidence-based cardiac rehab program. We have a team dedicated to understanding what peer-reviewed literature suggests the most effective “dose” of cardiac rehab is who developed the guidelines for our cardiac rehab program, ensuring that every patient we see is getting the highest quality care. Our program will consist of “multi-disciplinary” sessions, discussing the factors important to regaining and maintaining good cardiac health, as well as supervised exercise sessions with a team of physicians and certified kinesiologists. We strive to provide a holistic, flexible program that supports both the patient and their caregivers throughout their recovery process while removing barriers like lack of access, financial restraints, and transportation. By having a cardiac rehab in their community, patients will be far more likely to attend our program which will ultimately increase the health of not just individual patients, but our community.
